Unfolding the Skin Types

A healthy skin enhances our natural beauty and makes us love our mirror reflection even more!
Understanding our skin,  forms the base while building our skin care routine.  As we have all experienced that the triggers which deteriorate one person’s skin may not have the same effect on someone else’s skin, therefore to know what beauty products suit us best, it’s absolutely vital to know exactly, what type our skin is?

Skin forms a flexible protective barrier which covers every part of our body, hence we should have a holistic approach towards taking care of it rather than just focusing on our faces as many of us do.

Broadly speaking there are five types of healthy skin:

  • Normal Skin
  • Dry Skin
  • Oily Skin
  • Combination Skin
  • Sensitive Skin

Normal Skin’ is a skin with very few imperfections or nearly none at all. It is neither too dry nor too oily. People with this type of skin have a radiant complexion with no severe sensitivity and barely visible pores.
The other two types of skin are ‘Dry Skin’ and ‘Oily Skin’.
People with dry skin have cracked itchy and irritated skin with almost invisible pores. They mostly have a dull rough complexion and their skin posses more visible lines and is  less elastic.
Oily skin on the other hand has a shiny or greasy appearance, overactive sweat glands, obvious pores, black heads and pimples.

Several myths revolve around dry and oily skin such as “dry skin is a winter issue and occurs as a result of colder temperatures only” and oily skin people should avoid intense moisturizers” etc. Experts have debunked these myths by stating that dry skin occurs mainly as a result of skin not retaining enough moisture and is not just winter specific. Also, oily skin people should moisturize their skin too, otherwise a skin lacking hydration may lead to body producing more oil as a compensation.

Fourth type of skin is ‘Combination Skin’, which is usually oily in T zone and dry on cheeks. It has overly dilated pores, blackheads and is shiny in appearance.

Last on the list is ‘Sensitive Skin’. It is highly reactive to environment, cosmetics or even certain foods. This type of skin leads to redness, itching, burning and dryness sometimes.

Now a days, skin care products present in the market are not only quite efficacious but also targeted towards specific skin types, which indeed is the need of the hour!

The skin cells devitalize  and are reborn every day, so its never too late to start with a good skincare routine and lets not forget the famous saying “You are never too old to look younger”
So start working on it now!
